Starting Problems

Hi my wife has an F2 Coupe and recently we have had problems starting it. It seems to be getting worse. When you turn the key the engine turns over and makes a horrible noise as it turns over...... sounds expensive.. eventually afterturning it over now about 10 times but increasing.. it catches and runs fine . any help will be appreciated

If it's only doing it when you are turning it over it could be something as simple as your starter motor.

OK Albert thnx...... this morning it has gone completely I had to bumpstart it to get home from work this morning

..... so I had a look in the online manual........ and it says 1. remove batt terminal......2. remove air duct and air cleaner cover 3. remove air cleaner assembly and speedo cable..... 4. Remove starter motor...... is this right or am I looking at the right page in the manual.

I entered it as a Tiburon 1998 2L did i do the right thing?????

Hi

Your problem sounds like it is start motor related. Your starter motor has a pinion cog (1) that engages with the flywheel (2) when turning the engine over, then disengages when the engine is running. The grinding noise you describe sounds like the pinion c*ck has worn, and is has been making partial contact with the corresponding cog (hence grinding noise). Eventually after much grinding the teeth on the cog will have ground down thus not allowing the starter motor to kick the engine over.

At best you may get away with either renewing the whole starter motor or the pinion cog which won't cost the earth and is a fairly straight forward job. Alternatively, you may have damaged the flyhweel ring cog as well (the one that engages with the starter cog) which means removing the gearbox, clutch and fitting a new one - that will cost more and take more time to do!

Hope this helps! I may be wrong but it sounds like what I have described.

Ok after a new starter motor a year ago it went again, gearwheel was checked ok. new starter motor fitted fine for a few weeks, now making a horrible graunching sound on turnover again

Bloke who fitted the starter motor now says could be the gearbox

HELP Suggestions
