Inital "ticking" (as I call it) is fine when its cold, as the oil has probably drained out of the tappets over a period of time, (overnight), obviously when you first start up the car, the oil starts to go around the engine, and fills up the hydro`s (tappets) then they should go quiet, also as the oil heats up it gets thinner, so it fills up the tappets faster, the video on this topic is obviously showing this is not happening, my previous post on this, is all based on the assumption that the car has the correct oil in it, has had a regular oil change, etc..etc...etc...
If it has`nt then we could start going down the road of "worn" cams, etc. but we should stick to what we know and can "hear", engine flush can help, but all that trys to do, is clean out any deposits that maybe "blocking", this can be, the oil pickup pipe, a blocked tappet (though the chancies of this happening is like 1-10,000), oil filter maybe blocked? there could be a number of things that could be causing this, however (unless you got loads of money to burn, which i dont think many have at the moment) you could go through the entire "oil change, engine flush, new filter, oil treatment, hydrolic treatment fluid, valve conditioning treatment, etc..etc...etc...) total cost at least £100+... (cheaper to ask a garage to take alook).
**WARNING DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE DOING ANY ENGINE WORK TO PREVENT INJURY**
However, lets get our hands dirty and save a few quid, we have taken an estimated guess that its the tappets or timing chain, so take a look at the timing chain, and check the tension on that (see the manual for correct tension) if that seems ok, then the next stage is to take off the rocker cover, and then manually turn the engine over with a spanner or rachet and check each tappet with a gauge, though by the sounds of it, you will probably able to see which tappet is failing if its a tappet that has given up, if you cant, then as you manually turn the engine over, check each "hat" on the tappets to see if they are "popping up" as the cam leaves it, (note this will probably only happen once as the oil drains out), if you see a tappet that doesn`t "pop" when the cam leaves it, then this is most likely the damaged one, and will need replacing, I wouldn`t buy a "new" set if you can help it, as the cost is extreme, instead I would check e-bay or keep an eye on here, for an engine thats gone bang, and get a replacement tappet from this instead, should be cheaper.
for those that have a "bare`able" noise from there engines, do an oil flush, and get some "good quality oil", magnatec for example, yes it is expensive compared to the other oils, but £30-£40 once a year isn`t that bad when you consider the costs of doing the above. (engine treaments like SDP etc) is down to personal choice really, but if you use something like magnatec then you should`nt need any oil treatments to be added, lastly as a "tip" when you do the oil change, get a clean bit of "white cloth" (net curtains work well for this, but dont let the wife or your mum catch you using her best ones from the airing cupboard... lol) on the "old" oil thats come out of the engine, do a couple of "swipes" through it with the cloth, and see how much "debrie" it has in it, MANY MANY MANY people do an oil change without checking there old oil, and then go on to the next year for there next service, if you have a "fair amount debrie" in the old oil (large'ish clumps, or gritty bits), then do another change after a couple of months, dont wait for the full year, it is a "wise" idea at this time to use some "cheaper oil" if your gonna do another change after a couple of months, as you dont want to go throwing away a £30-£40 bottle of magnatec after a couple of months on a change, wash/rinse/repeat untill your happy with the condition of the "old oil" then use magnatec for the final change, you will have peace of mind then, that your engine is reasonable clean and will hopefully function for many years to come without problems.
Long post I appologise for that, but hopefully it will help some of you out there.
