can anyone tell me if there are any bad effects to losing the air duct and resonator? what was the point of it being installed by hyundai?

Or is it all just good news when attempting this mod?

Its all good news :)

The resonator is installed to reduce the induction noise, to keep everyone happy (to meet all db requirements in all countries, that type of thing).

if you lose the air duct wont you just be sucking in war less dense air from the engine bay rather than cold air from outside.

to get around that problem you could fit a cold air feed.

The only reason cold air is better is because its more dense and hence theres actually more air in a smaller space. So as long as plenty of air is getting in, you'll be fine.

Science Fact:
Theres actually no such thing as cold air, or cold anything. Something can either be hot or... less hot.

I also have done this mod, although it took longer than I though due to fuse box and the air box being in the way.

But as a free 'upgrade' it's fantastic, the pull above 4000rpm now is really noticable, and the noise is great, didn't expect the noise to be so good, more lazy V8 than V6. :D

my MPG has gone up a fair bit, not sure precisley but the needle is slower to reach the bottom!

but I do have to admit, I do like the growl, even my 1.6 sounds so much more throaty when the pedal drops!

Not quite sure about this mod.

What exactly is being done/removed ?

And how do you do this on a gen 3.5 (05 plate) coupe. (I think the air intake is different). Has anyone do it on a gen 3.5. (post pics)

The square intake on the 3.5 is by the battery, under the plastic cover. Just remove that and you'll see the snorkle that resembles the image in the DIY guide. The mod is removing this, and the connecting pipe which goes down under the battery and back up behind the front-left light.

as far as i understand the mod works on the gen1 & 2 by 1) increasing the air-flow because the snorkle-opening (cross-sectional area) is smaller than the pipe behind it and 2) removing any obstruction of the airflow - eg the resonator

Whether it achieves anything on the 3.5 (and probably gen 3) is a different matter. After looking at my car (05 gen 3.5) the snorkle opening is much larger (pretty much the same as the pipe), so there's not the first benefit, and cant locate a resonator (and read a cpl reports of it not existing due to Hyundai cost-cutting and awareness to the mod being performed on the gen 1/2's) so no 2nd benefit.

now, i could (and probably am) wrong tho... ;) love to hear of any1 with a gen3/3.5 who's done it and can report any findings

Removed the snorkul, but I cant see the bolts for the part at the bottom? I know just have 2 empty holes. One going right into the airbox, which is what this mod sets out to acheive, and one pointing down to a black plastic box. But I cant see where the holes are on this box to remove it? May just have to get out at the weekend and have a good look.

that is the resonator, you don't need tor remove it, but if you want it of, the bolts are hard to get at unless you take out the battery shelf bit.
