several papers have reported over the last few days fuel could rise to £2 a litre by 2015 and even higher by 2020.is anybody ever gonna do anything to stop this blatant rip off in the name of the enviroment, but actually to line others pockets??
*just noticed some mps want it as high as £3 a litre*

They want it that high because they won't get as much fuel duty in 2020. By that point there will be a significant amount of "city" cars running on batteries, and this will mean less fuel being bought at the pump. This results in less fuel duty (total, not %) so to offset they want higher prices to keep the fuel duty higher.

But quite happily allowing the mining of the Nickel and Cadmium for the batteries to completely overwhelm any amount of environmental damage done by cars...

Its much the same as most things with the gvt. Take student loans:

First they said they wanted 50% of people to go to uni

Then they slyly swapped the interest from the CPI to the RPI, which changed it from around 2% to nearly 5%, but promised it would always follow the RPI no matter what. They also cut grants right down

Then this year the RPI fell to -0.4%. The gvt decided they didn't like this so stuck student loans at 0%, which doesn't follow at all...

And I expect in the future it will be whatever they please

Anyway to make a bit (lot) of money for themselves...

all it needs is enough people to take their numbr plates off and break the law how ever they want. stealing fuel, speeding, jumping lights etc etc and last but not least parking the the middle of the roads blocking as much of the major cities and motorways as is possible :fingers

No he means he'll need at least 1 Scotcman down there

Back on topic then, Yeah I think it’s an absolute farce but by the time that happens, there will be alternative fuels to power our cars and I'm not talking about 20 tonne batteries.

Hydrogen Cells possibly.
Does make you laugh though.
It's the same with Fags. Saw something the other week that two lorry loads of smuggled cigs were caught. they say it was worth £30M in lost revenue.
Now if that is just two lorry loads, what will be the treasury deficit when every smoker gives up?

i read a while back that if every person in teh UK stopped smoking tomorrow it would be about 24 or 48 hours or something until the country was bankrupt.

And its a fact that for every £1 they spend on treating smoking related illness, they get the equivilent of £6 in tax from fags.

its also a fact that only 7% of accidents are caused by speeding, yet they love the revenue it creates.

also the goverments own research has shown, that if everyone in the UK was to use public transport and car were no longer used. It would create more pollution per person/per mile than if everyone used cars.

Guys, it won't matter if you could run your cars on fresh air - the Government will still want something approaching a fiver a gallon at today's prices.

I honestly believe this is why they are moving to road pricing.

At the end of the day Government like to waste money faster than it comes in - did you know that if the Government told everybody to not pay their road fund license any more they'd actually save money

That's right, it actually costs more to have a road tax system administered - they don't actually make a profit out of it at all to spend on the road networks supposedly - madness I know but this is only the tip of the iceberg.

What you should really be doing is getting involved and making your voices heard - they reckon they need to tax the motorist (the easiest target) so high just to help pay for the social welfare network.

So next time you bump into your buddies or aquaintances who are milking the system, be sure to thank them for your high levels of fuel taxation ;)

As we all know speed cameras now known as "safety" cameras have nothing at all to do with safety - otherwise they would not be positioned on the fastest part of straight sections of roads...it's simply revenue generation

From what I've read, personal vehicles/transportation really are not significant factors for global pollution in the first place, industry and military activities are the major offenders.

I often shake my head at the state this country is going in.

Anyway I have often joked about having a roof mounted machine gun on the coupe (previously for stupid drivers) but count me in for the Rioting!

As in don't live in the UK, I don't have basis for an opinion on the British Govt. However Ireland is in much the same state so I can understand everyones opinions. Petrol/diesel prices are forever rising and the cost of road tax is ridiculously high. Very little if any of the money the motorists are paying out in road tax every year goes towards road maintenance and upkeep.

the price of home heating oil continues to dro tho :confused :confused

If only cars ran on kerosene. Its only 50cent a litre

Ireland is a good comparison really - like most of the Eurozone where nearly everything is more expensive than the UK. Some of the costs in Ireland are nuts really! I'm not surprised folks travel up to the North to go shopping etc.

As a Scot I'm totally opposed to becoming a separate State, mainly for financial reasons, although also for commonsense reasons too - whats the point of leaving a smaller union just to become part of an even bigger (more barkingly expensive) union anyway? Also have you heard half of those muppets up at Holyrood? Some of them would make George Bush look/sound intelligent :o

Just like Ireland, we would still be part of the British Isles at the end of the day too ;) I certainly don't want to pay a premium just to wave a flag.

Cars can and do run on Kerosene you know - just buy a diesel - however 50c a Litre sounds a bit pricey for heating oil no? I think it's about 30~35p/L in the UK? You could always get an LPG conversion?

Thats about as cheap as it gets. It was almost €1.00 a litre 18months ago.

It (petrol) was dearer pretty much all of the time I spent over there during the past two year - apart from Diesel - but here's the rub.

You normally pay much more for the road tax etc to get the "discounted" pump price on diesel or LPG ;)

Britain is a bloody bargain right now whatever way you look at it!!! If you don't realise that you've not been out of the country enough!

I've just finished working in Holland with a salary tax of 52%, yes that's right, that's not a typo... :aargh

I was looking at a Hyundai garage in the local town where I lived a couple of months back - they had a 1999 Dawoo Lanos for sale with 160,000km (100k miles) for (in NL) a "bargainous" EU 3000 - what would that cost you in the UK? 300 quid? Another German bloke I worked with sold his 1999 Opel Astra last year for 5000 euros.... say what??? And he needed to sell it quickly because he was going to work in Portugal.

Right now I'm over in the USA - a place I've lived an worked for a good number of years - when I first came to the States it was extremely cheap indeed. I often shake my head in disbelief at how expensive many things have become over here - it used to be a fairly hard and fast rule that whatever you paid a quid for you'd pay a dollar over here. It's not really like that at all now - many day to day items are actually MUCH cheaper in the UK.

Let me just finish by saying that for years I've moaned about the UK - I've spent more than half of my life abroad. I've always loved the country and most of the people (although we do seem to have some sort of monopoly on mindless idiots) but the system always ****** me off.

I'm not sure what really happened but for several years now the UK has become more competitive and customer orientated. Of course YMMV but for me with my extensive travel experience the UK is where I'd want to live in the EU at this point in time

edited - try not to swear please m8, faz ;)
