Having watched Traffic Cops and Road Wars a few too many times, I've been wondering:

If the police are pursuing someone who has failed to stop, and they hit your car, do you have any recourse? Obviously if the police hit you they are insured, but what about the criminal? If the police catch them then they can surely inform you insurance company.

Any thoughts?

in order for your insurance to be valid you must be "driving in accordance with the law" fleeing from the police is erm.. not, so any insurance would be void.

Does this mean if YOUR car is stolen, chased by police and causes masses of damage because the theif is hitting every car in sight, maybe even a Ferrari or 2. The total damage bill comes to over £100k and your car is written off in the process....

In this circumstance does that mean that YOUR insurance would pay the whole bill as if YOU made a claim? I.e. your insurance company would pay you and all third parties for damages, stop your policy (because of the writeoff) and give you a new policy offer based on a £100k claim against YOU, with all your NCB gone, and because of the gargantuan claim amount against you the quote is like 10x what you paid in the first place?
Because frankly the thought of that makes me sick. I could go to sleep one night, having done nothing wrong, and wake up with no car, a cheque (about 3 weeks later AT BEST, PLUS CLEARING TIME) for the value of my car less excess (so I couldn't even afford to buy another one) and be told I will have to take another policy at like £5k (not 10x what I paid originally but there was some exaggeration in there somewhere lol).

Talk about a bad start to the day lol.


I hate that if your car is stolen, damaged while you're not even driving it, or by an uninsured driver etc essentially YOU are penalised because you lose your NCB and your insurance skyrockets especially when you are "young" like me (under 25).

Luckily it's never happened to me but I would be livid if it did.

it would, it's your responsability to secure your car.

Personally, I think the problem here lies solely with our justice system. Driving an un-insured or stolen car does not put a lot of these people off because the penalties are mostly laughable unless of course there is a fatality in the process. If you steal a car, you should be dealt with in a manner which will discourage you from doing it again i.e. a prison term because fines and points on a no-existent licence don't make any difference whatsoever.

always makes me laugh when you hear on traffic cops and such where they say Mr x was given a third driving ban.. erm, if the first 2 didnt work why would a third?
