i personally use meguiars a lot of the time but other products have graced my box but here is a starter for everyone not sure of how to do a proper clean polish and wax of your paint work

Meguiars Deep Crystal System

As far as I'm concerned, the three products in the Meguiars Deep Crystal system are an ideal starting point if your serious about getting into car detailing, not only will they leave your car with a really nice look but they go through the three important stages of paint detailing, and is how I learned the different requirements paint has. All products are eacy to use, and quick to use...

Preparation

The Deep Crystal system is not a complete paint detailing system in so far as there are a couple of preparation things that need to be done before starting in order to get the ultimate appearance from these products. First up, the paint must be clean! Wash with a good quality car shampoo (Meguiars Gold Class is very good as is NXT), rinse and thoroughly dry the car using a megs waffle weave water magnet . Next up, the car should be clayed. Run the palm of your hand gently across the paint - does it feel rough? Your feeling contaminants stuck in the paint that the washing process has not removed. These can be removed with clay, I use the Meguiars QuikClay Detaling system. Lubricate the paint with the QD spray provided, and sweep the clay in a back and forth motion across the paint with only finger light pressure. You will feel the clay sticking, dragging to start with then it will sweep cleanly and easily across the surface. When it sweeps easily, that area is completed. Keep the paint lubricated at all times. Once complete, buff away the lubricant with a microfibre towel or terry cloth towel (former recommened). Now run you hand across the paint - it should feel smooth and glass. All products will now apply and remove with greater ease and with better results...

Step 1 - Paint Cleaner

The product is designed to remove oxidisation marks, and hide spider web scratches (have a look at your paint under the halogen lights of a fuel station, is it like a spider's web has been draped across your paint?). It will also remove the build-up of old wax products, and leave your paint fresh and squeaky clean. Apply using a Meguiars sponge applicator. Squeeze a small amount of product (about the size of a pound coin) onto the applicator then apply to paint using medium pressure... Work on a small area at a time, abut half a bonnet... Work it into the paint, apply in straight lines and vary the direction of the application or circular application. Take your time, patience is the key here, and work it into your paint. Once complete, remove immediately with a clean microfibre towel, wipe off the product using medium pressure. Never let this prodcut dry on the paint.

Step 2 - Polish

My favourite stage. A polish contains rich oils that will wet your paint and give you a deep, wet look shine and clear and deep reflections. Apply in the same way as Step 1, using light to medium pressure, work the product into the paint and remove with a microfibre towel using medium pressure. Don't let the product dry on the paint, so only work on a small area at a time, as with setp 1. Again, patience is the key, don't rush this stage, as the polish is what gives you the deep wet shine. Ultimate shine is >90% preparation, <10% final wax!

Step 3 - Carnauba Wax

On its own, polishing oil is water soluble and so the shine will be gone after the first rain shower! You need to protect the shine with something, and this is where the carnauba wax comes in. Apply using a sponge applicator. Apply to the whole car at once and allow it to dry (cure). Apply using light pressure in straight lines or circles, ensuring even coverage. Ensure you only apply a small amount to the applicator at a time, so that you can apply the wax in a nice thin layer - if its too thick, it will be difficult to remove and you'll be wasting wax as you be wipng most of it away. To test its cured, perform a swipe test - swipe you finger gently across a small bit of paint, if the wax comes off cleanly, its ready for removal. Buff off using a microfibre towel, vary the direction of the removal and apply medium light to medium pressure. Turn towel often. Have a second, clean microfibre towel for the final wipe, and use it to buff to a deep wet look shine...

Step back and admire you're hard work, brew a cuppa or pop open a beer, you deserve it

USE OF THE CLAY BAR

What is a clay bar, and what can it be used for

Clay isn't a polish or a compound, it is a surface preparation bar that smoothes the paint and removes contaminants, Clay is not a replacement for polishing. It's a tool for quickly and easily removing surface contamination

A clay bar is as its name suggests a bar of clay, and is usually used in conjunction with some form of lubricant (or even normal car shampoo), and basically it is used on your cars paintwork/wheels/ and even glass, to remove surface contaminants such as tree sap, tar specks, brake dust etc.

The clay is used after washing the car and before applying waxes etc.

Clay is also very effective on paint over-spray.

Do you need to use a clay bar?

No matter how much you wash and wax your car this is not enough alone to remove certain contaminants, in fact waxing over such contaminants will only seal them onto your paint.

To check if you need to clay simply was your car and dry now simply run your finger- tips across the paint surfaces, which should feel as smooth as glass, if it doesn't then your paint is being attacked by contaminants, Removing these surface contaminants (tar, acid rain spots, bug residue, paint over-spray, brake dust, hard water spots, etc.) will improve both the look and health of your car's paint.

Using clay

Using clay is easy but do follow the manufacturers instructions, if you don't you could create a mess or mark your paint.

Firstly ensure that you car is thoroughly washed and dried, as with all car cleaning try to do it in the shade, and apply to a small area at a time. Then roll your clay into ball, this warms it up and makes it more usable, then mould it into a flat surface, you then spray a small amount of the lubricant onto the panel, and then rub the clay in back and forward motion using light/medium pressure, if it becomes hard to rub then you need to use more lubricant (this is because clay is quite sticky). When you have made a few passes rub your hand over the area and it should be smooth, if it isn't then you just follow the same process again until the area becomes glass smooth, when smooth remove all the residue with a micro fibre towel (a soft cotton towel will suffice also).

When you have completed the whole car it is advisable to wash the car down to remove the lubricant, you car is now ready for glazing/sealing/waxing, etc.

Tip, when you can no longer fold the clay into a clean surface you can use it for claying your glass or even your alloys, it surprising how much dirt you can remove from your cars glass, and likewise clay is perfect for removing brake dust from your alloys (Clay is not recommended on wheels that do not have a factory clear coat or powder coat finish).

Clay safety

1. Clay does have a mild cutting action so be careful in its use.

2. If you drop you clay bar dispose of it, as dirt will engrain itself into the clay, and this will of course scratch your paint.

3. Fold your clay regularly and check the clay often, if you find raised bits remove them with you nails

4. Always Read the manufacturers' instructions.

RichT wrote this on washing and drying

WASHING

Poor washing technique and the wrong tools leads to the majority of swirl makes and marring that you see on your cars paint. Swirl marks can be caused by both badly washing by hand and by automatic car washes.

Most good quality car washes are mild on wax, and all of the cars exterior components. The shampoo needs to foam up well and provide good lubrication to stop the dirt scratching the paint, and leave a good gloss finish to the cars appearance. Most car washes are much of the same if you pay for a reasonable one. Like most things everyone has the personal favourite, as long as it foams up well, produces a slick wash liquid that rinses easily and leaves a good finish IÂ’m happy. I tend to avoid the all in one wash and wax type products. I would rather worry about protecting the paint as separate step.

THE TWO BUCKET METHOD

The favoured method for cleaning a car by hand is known as the two-bucket method. Making sure the paintwork is cool and working in the shade if possible, firstly you need to hose the car down to remove as much of the loose dirt. Hosing alone will not remove all of the dirt, nothing short of a good scrubbing will do. This is where people first introduce marks into the paintwork in the wash process by using a sponge.

The best solution to this is to use a good quality deep pile wash mitt or pad. These hold lots of soapy water and are kind on your paintwork. Unlike normal sponges these are either made of sponge covered with microfiber, cotton or sheepskin, or as a mitt to wear on your hand. The nature of the construction means that the deep pile lets the dirt get drawn down into them away from the paint protecting your finish. Traditional use of normal flat-sided sponges canÂ’t do this, allowing the dirt to be trapped in a sandwich between the sponge and the paint. The dirt and grit then marks and swirls the paint surface, most noticeable if you have a dark paint. Even with a good foamy shampoo, the sponge will still cause damage that will later need to be polished out.

For this process you need two buckets, one with a good quality car wash and water mixture and one with clean rinse water. After washing a part of the car, instead of going straight back into your soapy bucket of wash and back to the car, use the rinse bucket to wash your pad or mitt before putting it into the soapy water and onto the paint. This means your wash bucket stays free from dirt and grit and stays foamy longer. As mentioned earlier choose a wash that is designed for car paintwork. The formulation will allow abrasive dirt to be safely removed with out scratching.

Start from the top and work down, this means that firstly you are starting with the roof, which tends to be the least dirty and allows the soapy water to run down and loosen the dirty bits lower down. During the cooler times of the year it is possible to wash the whole car and then rinse, in summer it may be advisable to do a side of the car at the time or even a panel at a time. You need to rinse often before the shampoo off before it dries, if it does it will streak and leave a film behind.

As well as washing the panels in an order steer clear of washing in circular motions. This way if by chance you do introduce swirl marks during the wash process, the circular motion will make the marks look much worse. For vertical surfaces such as doors, and wings wash in a top to bottom (up and down) motion, and for horizontal panels like the roof and bonnet wash front to back in straight lines, this way any marring caused wont show up so badly in the light.

RINSING

After washing give the car a rinse with a constant flow of water. The best way to do this is with the nozzle of the hosepipe, which allows the water to sheet off the panels rather than bead making drying the car a lot quicker. If the surface is well waxed this method will leave hardly any water to dry up.

DRYING

For drying I prefer to use either or a combination of a synthetic chamois and/or a mirofiber waffle weave drying towel. The latter is probably kinder to you paint. Again start at the top of the car and work you way down. If using a good size towel of chamois place it flat against the paint and pull it along absorbing as much water as you can in one pass. Ring and/or rinse it out often. To prevent steaks fold the towel or chamois into a pad for the final wipe.

WHEEL CLEANING

Taking one wheel and arch at a time rinse of any lose brake dust and dirt with the hose (make sure to get right in the arch with the hose), mix up your car wash to double the normal strength. It maybe a good idea to have a specific bucket just for your wheels so you know there is not any danger of the break dust getting on your paint next time you wash.

If the wheels are really dirty use a wheel cleaner to loosen up the baked on grime. Beware of most wheel cleaners, as they are acid based. I prefer to use Autoglym engine and machine cleaner as it is non acidic so is kinder on your alloys. If you are using an acid based cleaner consider watering it down to reduce the strength. If you have polished and waxed you wheels in the past soapy water should be all you need to clean them, as the protective coating left behind should stop the brake dust etching.

After letting the cleaners do their work for a few minutes, with the soapy water work your way round the tire, the face of the wheel, inside the spokes and rim. If you have very hard to clean wheels with small spokes, use a soft brush to get inside them best you can. After washing rinse the wheels and arches well with a good supply of water and dry

Thanks for both replies Griz, very helpful. I'll put that to good use sometime soon. Comments about extra rinse bucket and fleece mitt taken on board too. Its common sense now youve said it and is detailed above for the benefit of all.

Engine Bay Detailing

Stage 1

Safety First: Water and electrics do not mix, the use of high pressure hoses and steam cleaners may be useful for some people but if you don’t know what your doing or have concerns about using those methods then this ‘cautious’ guide is for you!

Some water will be involved in this process so ensure any air filter openings, battery terminals, distributor, spark plug openings and any other electrical devices are protected with a plastic bag, wrap the bag around the item or use a wire ‘tie’ don’t use carrier bags as these have holes in them!

This stage will be the most boring but shouldnÂ’t be skipped on. The engine bay should already be waterproof to some extent but it is best to take every precaution.

Stage 2

Degreasing the engine bay: Start by allowing the engine to warm slightly by turning it on, this will help to ‘melt’ any grease already on the engine. The engine should be hand hot.

Use a spray engine degreaser, for the bay below I used Autoglym engine and machine cleaner.

You can do the whole bay at once but I prefer to split it into sections and work one area at a time. Spray the degreaser liberally around your chosen segment and leave it to ‘sit’ for a few minutes. Using a stiff detailing brush or I used a 1.5 inch paint brush agitate the area that you have sprayed, getting into all the nooks and crannies. To prevent splashing any on your skin it is advised that you start from the lower parts of the engine and work your way up.

Once you have cleaned one area it is time to hose off. I would advise an open hose with the water pressure at half pressure at the tap head. Simply rinse the part that you have cleaned without directing the water onto/into any electrical areas. Repeat this stage until the entire engine bay is clean.

Stage 3

Protecting the engine bay: This is the fun and easy part; simply spray Autoglym vinyl and rubber care

liberally onto all parts of the engine. Do not wipe off. Remove plastic bags and turn engine on for 5 minutes or go for a short drive. The heat from the engine will dry any excess material and leave a sparkling finish. You may however want to wipe large flat areas such as engine covers to prevent spotting.

Well I invested in a range of Meguirs products and spent almost 6 hours today on the car. I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with some of the stuff. The quick clay was ok but the new NXT Tech car wax was pants I had to apply three coats and it still left a streaky finish on the bonnet. It was like trying to polish off a mixture of candle wax and lard. Not too bad with the dust actually there was very little dust it was more like beads of grease.

In the end I give up with it and reverted to black colour cut to finish the bonnet which was the worst area the colour cut gave me excellent results with just one appliction and polished off easily and gave a deep gloss shine with no swirls.

Anyone want to buy a part used bottle of Meguirs NXT Tech Wax, cost £15 new, open to offers.

I have just spent nearly 2 full days getting my paint back upto scratch, the method i used was six stages all using autoglym apart from the clay bar

1 wash with autoglym car shampoo

2 used my clay bar on every bit of the car

3 washed again with shampoo

4 removed residues and as many scratches as i could with autoglym colour restorer

5 waxed with autogly high gloss wax

6 and then finished with autoglym extra protection resin

oh and anyone know were i can get a good carnuba wax from as im concidering trying it as a final coat.

If you are having problems with swirl marks from the wax residue(not scratches) the final step is fantastic at removing them.

there are a few inperfections that i will work out soon but compared to what my paintwork was like(negected for a year cause i got bored with the car) its now like glass again and back to its normal 10 colours.

I have scratched my paintwork on a pressure washer hose at the garage  The hose must have had grit on it and I caught it across my bonnet. I now have quite a few scratches all across my bonnet. When I run a finger nail across I can feel a very small indent. It hasn't gone through to the undercoat. Can these be polished out? What is the best product to use and how would I go about doing it? I have read somewhere about using a glaze with filler to mask the scratches... can anyone recommend a glaze product with filler?

Thanks

Sharon

there's a few things u can try either Meguiars scratch x or if u have polisher some menzerna intensive polish. www.polishedbliss.co.uk will have both am sure or halfords has the meguiars for deffo.

as far as glaze meguars show car glaze #7 is pretty good as is clearkote red machine glaze

hope that helps

I am usually a meguires fan, but... Here in sydney turtlewax has released the best ever wax i have seen. It's called ice(synthetic). It takes about 40min to wax on and wax off. The sun has absolutely no effect on it. It removes a lot of the contamenants too and just leaves an amazing finish. It is only good if you use the original applicator, and a microfiber cloth. 1 bottle is enough for around 8 applications.

When it comes to wheels don't waist your money on cleaning broducts. The best thing to use is clothes detergent ie. OMO. It is non acidic, no scratching and removes all of the break dust and grime. Just use it like you use a car washing shampoo. Poor in bucket and add water. After the rim is clean I love using the meguires nxt gen all metal polish. The rim looks brand new.

I hope i haven't dragged you guys on.

thanx

Hey people

I'm looking at some detailing fun for my Coop this weekend - the paint's a bit of a mess and just needs clearing up a bit. I've bought the Meguiars Crystal system (1-3), but a few people said that Scratch-X (which I also have) works wonders on restoring old paint.

Is it worth doing both, in which case at what stage do I apply the Scratch-X? I'm also claying the car, so don't want to Scratch-X it just to remove it all again straight after ;)

Cheers
O.

Late reply apologys order you should do them in is below and a brief description hope this helps.

After washing and rinsing (dont dry) Claying will not ad anything to the paint it will remove contaminants tree sap rail dust and just general embedded dirt mind keep the panel wet with the spray lube u get in the pack.

After claying dry any water spots up

Scratch x area that needs it doing the whole car is pointless and very tiring

Step 1 of the megs 3 step apply to a panel with a foam applicator with medium pressur in a back an forth motion then remove

Step 2 of the megs apply to a panel at a time with a foam applicator and remove straight away do not let dry

Step 3 apply to the whole of the car let it haze and remove. stand back an enjoy lol

Graham

Another couple of cool things with clay (Done with Mothers California Gold kit)

a) If the clay falls on the ground and gets mucky dont throw it away! I use old crapped up clay for my wheels! Really brings off those stubborn stains (Apparently you can use it on glass too!)

b) Take a nice piece of claybar to all those bug splats on ur front numberplate and bumper! (Best bug remover I have ever used and doesnt scratch ur paint like those abraisive scrubber things!

Clay Bar Truly FTW!
