Hi folks

Well, after the hassle with getting new front discs on my partner's Gen 1 Coupe (2.0L auto), it's now intermittently not starting, hot or cold. It always starts in the end, but she's not particularly enthralled with this keep happening! So, reading threads, it's sounding like the crankshaft sensor (I've put a new battery on & cleared the ECU memory which didn't sort it).

I took it to a main dealer today for a diagnostic test and the only fault code was Camshaft sensor. Does this sound likely to you guys? Have ordered one off the net for £50, as Hyundai quoted £130 plus £65 fitting. Can anyone tell me how I can fit it myself, and if I need to re-wipe the ECU memory afterwards, or should I take it to a garage to get fitted?

I'm really hoping it is this sensor & not the crank one, having just ordered the cam one! Any advice much appreciated.

I got my crank sensor from a breakers for £5 whole pounds....but with no guarantee.

Look in the component location menu....the sensor is behind the cylinder head near cyl.4 injector( on the left as you look into the engine bay.

I was given this help when I had a problem. I wish it was your crank sensor...you only need a small flat driver and 10mm socket (thin walled, or long reach). The hardest part is sewing your knuckle back up.

Well, I got the cam sensor through, £51, and put it on (disconnected battery & pressed brake pedal to reset ECU), and car started OK. But, yesterday, she had the same problem! It started on the 4th spin though. So, anyone think I should look at changing the crank sensor? The only fault code that came up at the dealer was cam. Either their test rig didn't show the crank sensor (unlikely I think) or i have a new intermittent sensor (even more unlikely) or there's a problem between the sensor & the ECU in the wiring. None of these ring true so I'm a bit puzzled.

I just unbolted the old sensor and fitted the new one, is there something I didn't do, like getting no1 pot to tdc or something else?

If the fitting is correct, and it's undo a 10mm bolt and undo the connector, how can a dealer justify £64 for the fitting, on top of the £130 for the part?? Fitting took 5 minutes!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated as she doesn't enjoy the stress of not knowing if it'll start each time she stops!!

You can test the plug wiring for voltage....once you know which wire is pos you can test the other to earth on the engine for continuity.

The dealer must charge heavily for sewing his knuckle up. ....or he does this for a living...

If the problem hasn't gone after you payed that much you have a right to get them to do a diagnostic now the problem recurred....to see if another code has come up....tell them you followed their suggestion when you had the sensor fitted. Don't accept no for an answer as you have to post your result on the largest Hyundai forum in the land. No more money should change hands at this time!

....otherwise I'd suspect that darned easy peasy crank sensor.

Thanks Gee. No worries about the dealer, I didn't take them up on the £194 offer, did it myself for £51 all in. But still not sure about the crank sensor as their diagnosis (which they did for free so fair play there) only came up with cam sensor.
