Hi all, went to the old site (havent been here for a while) to check on a choke issue i have and ended here

The issue: when I start in the mornings the auto choke comes in fine... however it doesnt drop back to normal idle when the car has warmed up.

Whilst driving (in a straight line) if I turn the engine off and back on again its okay? So it seems electronic at a guess?

Is this a common fault and can anyone shed light on a remedy please. I dont get the TPS symptoms as its not eratic, the choke just stays on untill turned off.

Choke?! Those things went out along time ago when carburettors disappeared - your car is fuel injected and hence any and all control of the fuel is done by the ECU.

However, what you have doesn't necessarrily sound like an overfuelling problem, but could well be one of overairing due to the idle control valve sticking open despite the engine being up to temp.

Causes of this could be numerous e.g. leaking idle system (although you say the problem 'resets' so unlikely to be this), sticking idle valve, dodgy temperature sensor (again though, doesn't tally with the resetable nature), dodgy ECU (again, unlikely and I'd only suspect it after everything else had been categorically ruled out).

It could also be the infamous TPS failure - disregard anything related to your symptoms not matching those had by many others. A TPS failure can manifest itself in exactly how you describe (bar the resetable aspect, which has me stumped).

Without being stood in front of the engine it's difficult to suggest where you should start.. perhaps others who've had similar can shed some light for you...

Choke.. oh yes they have gone! As you gather my last "haynes manual" was a long time ago!!

However glad you picked up on what I meant

To clarify, from cold it idles at about 1700rpm and stays like that even when at running temp. However once at running temp if I kill the ignition whilst driving it resets and idles nicely at about 800rpm.

If I get back in it soon after eg a local trip to tesco, its fine. I can only describe it similiar to the "old fashioned" choke type syndrome?
