Hi All. I could really do with some advice. I own a Gen1 2000/V plate 2.0 auto SE coupe. With one old lady owner before me having only covered 28K when I bought last year. I had a big service when I bought (JAN 09). All fluids, all belts, all filters, plugs, MOT, 4 x tyres, discs n pads ETC. One year and 4K miles later I have just noticed lots of 'mayo' in oil filler and on dip stick with a lot of 'water' under oil filler. Do these suffer with head gasket problems? Would there be any other reason for this? Im not sure wether to flush system and fill with new oil and see how it goes? The coolant is down about 10 CM. HELP!

They don't suffer from HGF as a rule, however do tend to get a bit of mayo under the filler cap. If your losing water and getting mayo on the dipstick then it sounds like theres water getting in somewhere

If your coolent is down that far then it doesn't look good, I'm afraid. You could have a leak somewhere I suppose, but the mayo on the dipstick is not a good sign.

I'd be looking at getting the engine compression tested (most places do this for around £20) by a garage, though you can purchase your own tester for £20ish from Halfords. This will provide compression readouts for each cylinder, low readings in 2 adjacent cylinders would be consistant with HGF.

Ahhh that sounds a bit better, bit more like normal usage is that.

Regarding the mayo in the oil - you might want to consider using an engine flush to get rid of it, then do an oil and filter change. It's not healthy stuff to have floating around in your oil in the long term. As to it's formation, 4K over the course of a year (only just noticed that) is not a lot of mileage. I'm guessing you do a lot of city driving or short runs. You might want to consider changine the oil maybe twice a year to prevent this from happening - mayo is emulsification of oil, either from coolent getting in (HGF) or condensation forming from short runs in the cold.
