Engine has gone kerplooey. 2002, v6, 74000 miles. Serviced a month ago.

Rattled a bit down the motorway changing tempo with revs. Stalled at the traffic lights at the roundabout. Restarted. Stalled. Restarted with a bit of welly. Bang, smoke.

Suspected cracked crank, engine sounds like a bag of gravel when attempting to fire up, soon as the RAC man heard that shouted Stop!!!. Head, valves, cam.. could be anything gone bang.

Quotes for replacement engines (with minimal guarantees) are £1500 and then a grand or more to fit.

How much is an V6 '02 coupe worth anyway? Just had two new tyres and clutch is about 10000 miles old. Irrelevant but expensive.

Not being funny or anything but didn't the first signs of problems prompt you to stop straight away and turn off engine? might have saved yourself some money there.

I remember seeing a while ago some company on eBay offering supply and fit for a (I think refurbished) V6 for the coupé for £1550 or something along those lines. I haven't seen it in a while though I'm afraid.

Looking on autotrader, 02 V6s are advertised for 2.5 - 3.5K. So I'm really wondering if its worth it or just scrappage.

get a new engine in there. Should be able to get one sourced, and fitted for sub 1k

Every quote I've had today has been £1000 - £1500 for the engine as a crated delivery. And thats with 30 day - 3 month warranty on it. Doesnt say if it comes with manifolds and other bits either.

Cheapest fitting charge so far is £950.

Those costs dont include VAT.

It might be cheaper than you think to repair it. I'm having a V6 towed in that needs a major engine repair, once I've looked at it I'll post costs on here.

What is it that makes you think the crank has cracked?

When it blew there was no oil leak apparent. When it was rolled off the trailer it had dumped its oil everywhere.

That was the RAC mans diagnosis, I got no idea what could be wrong. I'm going on the garage and the RAC guys ideas for now.

sounds strange that, but i'd not put that down to a 'cracked crank'

That was the independant garage near me (Camberley, Surrey) which is where the RAC towed it to. The usual place I go to for servicing etc. wont go near it, they'll only do the 'easy' stuff - cambelts, exhausts, brakes etc.

I'm no mechanic, so am I being done over? And if you charge that, can you source an engine too if it needs one? (starting to clutch at straws here, having been offered £500 for scrap).
