hi guys

my clutch has been slipping for about 3 months and it has got alot worse this week, so i thought i have to get it done, i took it to the local garage and they quoted me about 300 quid for a new one fully fitted, but he also said my flywheel might need replacing aswell at a charge of about 400-500 quid, this this correct?? what are the chances that i need a new flywheel?

Is it a 'dual mass' flywheel?

If it's been slipping for ages, the chances are you have lost or scored the heat treated surface. If it's not too badly damaged, it can be skimmed - but I'm not sure if it can be performed on Dual Mass flywheels.

They are also pretty pricey, unfortunately...

its the gen 3.5 20L so not sure if its a duel mass flywheel? i thought that was just on the V6 coupe... anyone know?

i have checked with hyundai and the 2.0L coupe doesnt have the duel mass flywheel so least it wont be as expensive... is there any way of telling if the flywheel is badly damaged without looking at it?

No. There are no inspection panels or hatches or owt else like that - you need to be having the clutch out for a flywheel inspection to be possible...

thats really annoying as every garage you go to will suggest you may have a burnt damaged flywheel so they will phone up half way thru the job and tell me i need to spend another 400 quid to replace that!! not good!!! anyone live in the south east that can suggest a decent garage to go to!! or better still can anyone replace my clutch who wont rob me!!

Having used them a few times in the past - I can recommend Mr Clutch, been to 3 different branches and they were all excellent and knowledgeable types. The work is top class and though the parts tend to be pattern rather than genuine, they are top draw stuff.

Worth a try...

i rang mr clutch and they can supply and fit a clutch for £399 and i asked about my flywheel and they said if its been running for a few months with slipping then its most likely burnt, but they also said they can skim and rebalance for 76 quid rather than replacing the lot for 300+

i have the gen 3.5 2.0l does it sound like a good price?

Seems on par with other quotations - ask for a cost breakdown for the clutch and labour, you may be able to source the clutch parts cheaper. This would do away with their 2yr warrenty on parts tho...

i rang three mr clutch garages and the best quote i got was 399 for clutch and 76 for repair on a flywheel, im worried they will still turn around and say i need a replacement flywheel, which will double the repair price, i have been driving the car for several months with a slipping clutch? would this need some sort of repair or replacement?

£340 is a very good price but can you guarentee i wont need a new flywheel?

Stew is it worth not telling them you have drove for a few months with it slipping. Then they might not even think about saying you need a new flywheel. If they do just say you dont want it as you have it on good authority it should be fine and tell them just to put the clutch in.

Just a quick point - if they do say it needs a flywheel, go down there and take some photos of it. Then send them to me and i'll advise you as to whether it does or not. (I still say it wont though).

yes, i only work 2 mins from the garage so ill say please contact me if the flywheel does need repairing so i can some down and have a look! If i get some photos and it doesnt need repairing then at least i can go back for refund!!
