ok... changed to 5/40 fully synthetic about a month ago and no problems topped up a few days ago as distick was halfway as obviously the oil need to flow a little. but just come back fro ma long journey up to Manchester and had to top up same amount again.

There is no oil on my drive or within the engine bay

There is no blue smoke coming from my exhaust

The coolant reservoir has no sludge in it

It has never really been on a long journey like this could this be the reason, its only driven 40 miles a day to and from work.

I don't really give it the beans only on odd occasion

Are coupes prone for drinking oil on long journeys or could it be the fact i have gone to 5/40 from 10/40

The car is a hyundai couep f2 evolution 60,000miles

You guys expertise would be appreciated

5W is too thin, should be 10W - thats what I ran in our gen1 and it hardly used any between services.

Buy cheap, change often - the 10W from Wilco is the stuff I used, plenty good enough if changeed every 5k miles :thumbup

I had the same problem as you. my car would drink oil, no leak, no blue smoke

i used this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Forte-Seal-Condit ... 345wt_1165

honest it worked. my oil is not dropped like it did, maybe it works for you?

changing to fully synthetic at 60k is pointless, the gains from using synthetic oil are purely in the engines early life circa 10kmiles,. i use 15w40 changed every 3months or 3k whichever comes 1st.

well i have tried everything bar a compression test

- crazy i know but i have stuck my face near the exhaust (lost a few braincells and was dizzy for a while) but could smell no oil just fuel.

- I have checked around the engine for leaks none whatsoever even checked the sump plug and oil filter but nothing

- ive looked into the rocker cover no sludge and coolant no sludge however there was a distinct smell of fuel in the oil filler cap (hmmm)

- To be honest i think im starting to make things up in my head when the answer is right there in front of me its gotta be the fact the my engine for its age obviously gets a little hot as its done 60k and the viscosity of 5w/40 s too thin and on motorways journeys just burns the oil

ill give it 1000 more miles and ill change back to 10w/40, i especially don't want this problem as soon my supercharger will be bolting on :P

im sure mine has a leak, in fact it was on the last mot but haven't had the time to fix. May just put 15/40 in it and some of that stop leak stuff to see if it helps. But mines on 175000 so probably has more holes than a sieve. I seem to use about a liter a month lol

Don't use stop leak Joe, please. It's chronic stuff, might as well put black treacle in your engine - it'll stuff your 'lifters badly. OK for old OHV engines but not for the modern ones.

Either get it fixed, or put up with the leak in the knowledge that at least the oil is always fairly fresh.

Nobody approves? I took my car to sharky, he saw the car and smelt it burning oil, would use alot, he recommended the Forte seal conditioner cost £15

And no word of a lie, it worked for me. my oil had stopped burning and the smell has gone. 100% truth

its widely disputed, and loved at the same time.

Its like the wynns engine flush - if i ever saw anyone tipping a can of that into their car (and yes, ive done it on an old peugeot so i know exactly what can happen) id scream at them!

But others swear by it

It may just be me, but I never seem to get much oil in it, I top-up every 500(ish) miles, usually get 1/3 to 1/2 a tank in, which dont' take much to overfill, (only on 2nd 5litre bottle in 15months) so maybe its a small tank having the effect of making you think you using more than you are.
Puma on the other hand, I'm topping it up every week, and I know the tank on that is tiny.

It's come from a bit of condesation cuz it's so friggin cold at the minute. Jeez theres some paranoid people about lately...

Seal conditioner additives work by revitalising rubber seals that have hardened up over time or lack of use. I had this on our gen1 when it had laid up for 3 months. The crankshaft pulley seal was leaking pretty badly, I considered using the stuff then, but I'm not keen on oil additives, so just gave it the benefit of the doubt. It had stopped after three weeks...

Those products are all well and good, but often you are storing up trouble for the future - mrkieran23, I'd wait and see if the leaky valve stem issue you have returns before singing the praises of a wonder product, IMHO. It's bought you some time, but thats all. The only permanent cure for a worn seal is replacement, I don't care what the mechanics say...

Don't think that works with valve stem seals mate. TBH, the work in removing them and the unit cost being a few pence per seal, you'd be better off replacing them...

yeah theyre only teeny tiny ones - i remember QEP looking at them when i went to have the cylinder head looked at for work.

Either way, whichever, i doubt its seals - if there isnt any smoke, then just thicker oil for a while and see - if it aint blowin blue, dont worry

Nah Andy - that remark was intended for mrkieran23, who was burning oil and now currently isn't, on account of the addition of the seal conditioner stuff. ;)

Dunno what causes the oil loss. They don't burn it in any great quantity, or you'd all be failing emissions. They don't leak, or there'd be an oil refinary at the Brum Toys'r'Us by now :lol The only other place they can get rid of it (that I can think of) is through the breather system. Maybe someone with a catch can fitted (?Dupleman?) can shed some light - bit of a strange one though, as some loose much more than others.

Ahh well, no worries...

yes , thats a good point there Rik - Just before Aarons car was condemned to the depths of the garden, he went through periods of burning oil so badly when his foot was down it blew smoke like a madman for a while - a drastic version, but it was suggested that maybe it was being returned back through the breather, through IM and being burnt.....
