Right need this sorting now guys, brand new battery has gone in started first time gave it a while till it warmed up and its still struggling!!

its a 97 gen 1 2.0 and its had the coil done as well as the list in the following thread:

i really need this fixing cause dad is losing his patiences and due to past health problems he don't need this.

as soon as you touch the accelerator it starts to decrease revs before lifting, and will stall most of the time and then struggle to bloody start !!!

please help guys

is the gen 1 cable throttle or fly wire, could be stretched cable as it seems to be throttle related????

Well i started with it today, and the thing wouldn't start unless you pressed the accelerator and even then it was lumpy. as soon as you let off the car would either stall straight away or idle for a little while.

So i checked the plugs pulled the cables out one at a time and replaced and everything was ok from what i saw, didn't take the actual plugs out cause if am honest wasn't confident doing it, do you just unscrew the plug out while the car is idling??

Then i remembered about taking the oil cap off and it makes the car run different, well it didnt effect the car at all but saw mayo on the bottom so does this mean its a headgasket gone and thats the problem from the start??

Couldn't find where the maf was, rang around today and found a hyundai garage but we can't get it there due to no lift

HI - what a palarver! It seems you ar trying everything obvious and getting nowhere.
Time to start from scratch
Do this first...
Check plugs are in properly then the caps are fitted on tight then the leads are on in the right order it fires in the order 1-3-4-2 for the four cylinder engines without looking it up.

Once you have got that sorted you really need some equipment, as suggested above do a compression check - just to be sure. Mayo may mean its just had alot of short journeys recently - on hte other hand it could be symptomatic of other problems - check the oil on the dipstick - is it streaky? Are there beads of water on it? HOpefully its just clean oil.

Next thing is fuel - not really a DIY check if you dont know what you are doing - so dont. A blocked fuel filter will give exactly these symptoms. ( you owe me a pint if thats what it is!)


Then its back to a sensible garage (get one thats recommended by someone off here if you can) and get a thorough check done - yours is a 97 so its not ODB compliant but it is possible to get the codes out with good kit.

mayo on early gen 1's & 2's is normal in the winter around the oil cap, but only small amounts...

Hey guys thanks for the replies, alot there to look at!! I've got next week off to look at both my dad's and my car so will be looking at the fuel filter and im 90% sure the leads are fine as I replaced them one by one.

Just seems odd that it was doing it when it got hot only, but once the ignition coil, leads and plugs where put in its struggling! I'll look to make sure the plugs are in proper

The mayo has now gone, the BMW had the same at the same time so put it down to the weather and the dipsticks are fine

So next on the list:

1. Check plugs & cables again
2. Check compression
3. Check fuel filter

Due to working for Barclays I have a RAC package that will be picking the car off and dropping it off at a new local Hyundai garage so hopefully its not full of idiots like I find at alot of dealers.

Hope its going to be a good xmas for my dad!! i'll keep you all updated
