i have heard of that before, but it wasn't as effective as it sounds, in all fairness, no large particles or crap should get passed the fuel filter. the results of a blocked filter would be as you say, fuel starvation or reduced fuel to the injectors, i found that some fuel tanks at garages (especially supermarkets) have that much crap in them, it just gets pumped in to your car when you fill up.
if you start having starvation probs, i'd change the fuel filter first and see if it cures it.
they usually recomend the fuel filter be changed every 20,000 ,iles , but ive known some to be on there 60, ooo, an then the punter wonder's why his engine runs like a bag of sh*te.
i change my fuel filter every 2 years, i even cut one open once, i was shocked at how dirty and slimey it was, unreal mate.
