Hi all,

I have noticed recently when driving my speed-o-meter, goes up and down rapidly, for a bit, then drops straight down to zero for a good 5 mins then sometimes picks up, and goes back to normal!
Why is this? i was told it could be tracking, but that dont make sense!

the Rev meter works fine, its just odd how it sometimes does it? is it something urgent to fix?

It drives th esame , and dont notice any other problems cos of it?

it sounds like the speedo cable may be giving up the ghost or maybe just coming loose. Not sure of the costs as i have never had to replace one. They are usually just square on the ends and fit into a square hole, sometimes these can round off and cause them to slip or become loose which will eventually round it off. This is not 100% but it is the most likely part to be worn.

Coupes dont use speedo cables, its all electronic as far as im aware.

Crazychicken - check the wiring to the speed sensor - it's located on the gearbox:



(Unplug it to make sure you've got the right one, and not the nearby reverse light switch)

The speedo itself shares a common supply/ground with the other gauges so unless you're seeing any other problems then it's almost a certainty that it's either the sensor itself or the wiring/plug.

It seems there are two types, as there is also this one. It can be found on hma under transmission/manual transaxle system/speedometer cable replacement.

SPEEDOMETER CABLE REPLACEMENT

1. Correctly insert the adapter into the instrument panel, and fasten the new speedometer cable.



2. Install the grommet so the cable attachment part and the projecting part are horizontal, as shown in the illustration.

CAUTION
The cable should be installed so that the radius of the cable bend is 150 mm (5.9 in.) or more.

3. At the transaxle, the cable should be inserted into the transaxle, and the nut should be securely tightened.



CAUTION
If the cable is not correctly and securely connected, it may cause the speedometer to read incorrectly or it may produce abnormal noise.
