Today I visited my local dealer to see how much the 60k service would cost for my 02 Coupe V6. I was quoted an amount which obviously didn't cover the cambelt change so I asked whether the cambelt should have been changed at the 50k service. I was told that it should have been and as I had serviced the car at this dealer for the 50k service I said surely they should have informed me that the cambelt should have been changed especially to keep my car in the 5 year warranty. The guy there promptly responded that yes they should as belts have been known to go at 55k miles.

So then it arose that the 5 year warranty only applies to vehicles after aug 02. Now when I bought this car second hand last year I specifically rang Hyundai UK to -double check- that the car had a 5 year warranty and they said most definitely that it did. So if the car was before the 5 year warranty period apparently the cambelt doesn't require changing till 60k miles which seems a bit strange. Sounds more to me like belts have been known to blow up so therefore they changed the interval to 50k miles.

So the result is. I am scared to drive the car as it is approaching 60k miles and am also left with a car that is apparently under no warranty. The only reason I bought the car was because of the 5 year warranty and if it does not have one I shall want to get rid as there is too much to go wrong although touch wood nothing has in the almost year period I've owned it.

Any advice? I believe the first thing is to get the car booked in for a belt change asap although the dealer was quoting something in excess of £550 for a service and belt change which seems excessive.

Just a reminder to others. The belt on the 2.7l V6 is scheduled to be changed at 27k or 24 months whichever comes first so EDZ and I both are wary about the belt condition. Mines only done 10,00miles but is well over the 24 months now so like EDZ I,m talking to Hyundai as they didnt pick this up at the last service, which was 9,000m but approx 30 months. I've visually checked the belt and looks as good as new but lots of repair required on the V6 if the belt has deteriorated and lets go, so normal driving only til replaced!!
It does seem a very short interval to the belt change.

Also does anyone have any tips how to inspect the belt?

I you remove the engine cover, you can get a squint at it, otherwise, through the offside wheel arch. You can only really see if theres fraying or contamination and as you cant see all the belt at once you can put a chalk mark where you already looked then spin the motor ( probably several times) until youre happy youve seen it all.

edZ = you should have the Hyundai used car warranty on the car witch is a years cover and some brake down cover. If the car was due for a belt change then it would have alerted hyundai on there service computer history.

If they did not replace it at 50K then i am not sure whatÂ’s going on there.

I also drive an 02 plate witch dosn't have 5 year warranty but i am covered by 1 years used warranty. and £550 seems the right price for a belt change and service. remember it is 2 belts and the engine has to be dropped and partly dismantled to do it.
