I was browsing through What Car? magazine in my local WH Smiths the other day, and was surprised to see a news report claiming that Hyundai are going to drop the Coupe line in 18 months from now, and won't replace the current SIII.

Hyundai reckon the market for Coupes in general is down, as Hot Hatches have recently become much more popular again. The magazine also claimed that instead of a new Coupe, Hyundai are going to make a sporty version of the brand-new i30 hatch series, with a 2.0 litre turbo kicking-out 220 BHP or so.

Personally, I'd be surprised if the Coupe goes. Although on the other hand, after 30+ years of continuous production, the likes of Toyota decided not to bother replacing the current Celica, due to falling demand, so who knows?

if every other car maker is droppong their coupes then isnt that more reason to keep making the hyundai as they'll have the market sector all to them selves.

give us what we want not what they want sell, without the coupe hyundai would still be a cheap joke brand, its there best selling model and has still is the driving force behind there rising success in the uk. i want to see them make new version no facelift a totally new coupe with a better engine line up and more power. when i reach the next the level of my job and nice large pay rise to boot with it, id defo be in the market for a hardcore high power coupe. lets face it with exception of alfa's and aston martins the h coupe has been the best looking coupe all of its gen's. and alfa's are rust buckets that break all the time and i dont know anyone who can afford an aston unless its an early low spec db7 for 25K, which wont be partically good.

I've been led to believe that the Coupe will continue but with a completely new design. I personally can't see they stopping the coupe as that is what has made there brand known. They'd be stupid if they did!

honda even got 237bhp from normally aspd 2.0lt in the s2000, looking around at the tuning stuff i think coupe 2.0 could be tuned to 180bhp with out to much hassel or using a turbo or supercharger

Just a thought but sometimes I think that the reason why the power is down on the 1.6, 2.0 and the 2.7 V6 is because Hyundai have to make sure that the car lasts the duration of the 5 year warranty. Detuning the engine and making produce less horsepower is one way of making sure that its durable for that length of time.
Its just a thought and I might have it wrong though.

You may be right. However, if that is the case, then Hyundai could be a bit out of touch as Renault and Nissan (and maybe more) offer a lifetime warranty on new cars should they be kept indefinately by the original buyer. No doubt there are conditions attached to this, and to be honest I'm not clear if this deal is from the manufacturers or an offer specific to the Sunwin organisation that encompasses various dealerships in Derby. Admittedly I didn't check to see whether Sunwin Hyundai do the same deal.

What I would say in favour of Hyundai is that because the performance is as inferior as it is, compared to equivalent engines elsewhere, you can at least get an awesome looking car attached to a reasonable insurance group !

I had a journey in a minging Merc coupe recently....plant your foot at 110 mph and it sits you back like it's in second. 5.0l V8....very, very minging.
