The beeb just posted a news article about MOT failure statistics for 2007, obtained under a Freedom of Information request. The article includes a link to a complete spreadsheet of all the failure stats, for all makes and models. It includes the Coupe.

I'd attach the whole spreadsheet as an Excel file but it's ~3Mb and I'm guessing that might not be welcome and you've got the link.

Er, I'm not offering any real comment here, but I thought it might be interesting to someone. With a bit of Excel wizardry, you could probably work out some comparisons to other vehicles. Bear in mind the data gives no idea of the typical mileage covered by different types (the article makes a valid point that common fleet car types would be expected to do more miles on average, so might be more likely to fail) or the level of care / abuse they get.

ok.. quick look (may not be 100%)

Hyundai coupe as a whole
number 526th out of 1195

of which there are 34 models within the same number tested range (35k to 45k overall cars tested)
it hits 16th outta them which pretty much puts it in the middle of the field..

so aparently the cars not invincible, but it's also not held together with biodegradeable jam

as said there is no milages listed, i can't see this being a very fair or accurate listing of the reliability and build quality of a car. i would like to also state 90% if not all of an MOT test comprises of the condition of parts that are 'user consumables' and therefore will have 'pattern part' companies catering for those parts, which, are infamous for not being the quality of OEM parts, but being cheaper they will be used by the vast majority of (non-manufacturer) garages and home DIY repair people, which, from an educated guess far outweigh the amount of cars repaired at a main dealers.
