Yeah it's funny once you aclimatise to living in SE Asia - I spent 6 years in Hong Kong from 1995~2001 and had a ball generally speaking - especially socially.
To be honest I was one of the few guys that went to the far East and actually calmed down - for most guys it's like walking into a "sweety shop"
There's lots of very honest middle aged or older guys that will never leave due to the social life. One of my old colleagues was around 55 at the time and said to me that he had nothing to look forward to by going home to the UK.
I also did a bit of teaching English over in Hong Kong on a part time basis at the weekends. This was probably about 10 years ago now and got paid up to 50 quid an hour - which is easily the equivalent of 100 quid today. I was actually an Engineer on the New Hong Kong Airport project (Ground Transportation Centre) and didn't really need to supplement my income but teaching certainly gave me a nice little kitty for beer money
as I did about 10 hours in total per week - not bad for just talking to people really
One of the things I found surprising was how racist SE Asians can be though - there's very much a lighter skinned = higher class, darker skin = lower class mentality going on. As a fair skinned Scot that did not pose any problems for me naturally
I also thought that Korean guys looked like the only SE Asians that might give you a run for your money in a fight
In HK you never really saw any trouble at all but when it did "kick off" - people just came out of the walls with meat cleavers, 2x4's and sticks - definitely not recommended!
Great times though
