is it possible to fit a six speed gearbox to a 2.0l gen3 as i do alot of motorway miles and i feel this would increase fuel consumption by quite alot as the engine revs at nearly 4000rpm at 80mph i think this would be reduced alot with an extra gear if it is possible does anyone know how much for a box and who could fit it thanx for any replys guys

I would say it can't be done, basing that opinion on the fact the the 6 speed is only fitted to the v6.

The engine block will be a different shape to the inline 4 engines, and as such i would of though the gearbox housing will be a different shape and have different mounting points, thats before you get into the selector/linkage cables side of thing.

I could be wrong, hopefully i am, as i wouldnt mind an extra gear sometimes either

I would think it could be done, many people change FTO tiptronic 4spd auto to 5spd manual so i shouldn't think it cant be done...probably just a case of cost, for the box, labour and many modifications that would need to be done to get it to fit.

Why not just trade in and get a 6 speed surely it would be easier in the long run, probably cheaper too? And having a factory 6 speed will probably make quite a bit of difference insurance wise as opposed to a 5-6 speed conversion.

as sad as it sounds though, Hig could be onto something (ish) - maybe not as extreme as doing 60, and im not trying to sound patronising (honest) but what are your motorway driving habits like? Keeping to a steady 70/80 will of course improve mpg, but remember when you accellerate to overtake, or from harsh braking thats where you lose the petrol. Keeping fluid and smooth is the main way to maintain speed and mpg.

Now naturally, i cant enforce this as im a sh*te motorway driver and do the opposite but ive been told over and over and over by other people thats how you get great results

i recently watched an episode of top gear where clarkson did 800 miles in an audi a4 auto on a single tank. Even audi said it was impossible yet by keeping fluid motion he did it.
