My current car (MG ZR) seems to make a lot of guestimates driving hard or normal.

Didn't happen to be on unlevel ground?

i had a capri that stuck at a quarter tank that was great fun i kept a few litres in the boot as i was always running out of fuel

The gauge needle is damped so as to not be affected by sudden changes in level. If it weren't like this then the constant fuel sloshing would have your needle jumping all over the place.

As Lakez says the movement in the tank will have dropped the needle and it'll have taken a while to get back to something more reasonable. You can usually see a similar effect when you fill up at a garage and turn your ignition back on - the needle will gradually rise, slowing down as it nears its final reading.

Note that this damping is also the reason why the needle maintains a reading even with the ignition off.
