Right, the tale. I was following a dark silver/grey astra 57 reg this afternoon and its underpan fell off hitting my car , it broke my foglight which i was pretty pi$$ed off at. but the lad obviousley had no idea what had happened(i hope). Basically i'd like to take his underpan back to him and ask for a bit of compo for my light lol i know the reg is there a way i can find his name/adress out?

cheers

johny

Write to the DVLA they are obliged to provide you with the said information.

I believe there is an admin fee for getting the info from the dvla..

however there is always a black mark on your insurance for claiming regardless of blame.

Well, there is, yeah - but in this case it's pretty straightforward. I mean - Johny has the rego, the undertray. All the insurance has to do is a basic claim. Woouldn't affect his premiums and only stays on for three years anyways.

Serves the other bloke right, he'd have deffo heard the bang and should have stopped...

Dunno, don't think so - our local Tesco pulls vehicle data from DVLA to fine drivers who 'outstay their welcome' in the carpark...

fill in any insurance quote form..

"have you had any accidents or claims in the last 5 years even if they were not your fault"
then there is an "at fault" tick or cross

It does affect things even if they say it wont, else they wouldnt even ask for the information in the first place.. plus there's no such thing as a straight forward claim, even miller is having a rough time claiming from a guy who reversed into him with him and a number of witnesses watching from outside of the car!

from the OP's post I get the idea he wants to try his luck hoping the guy has a shread of decency and offers some compensation, if not it was worth a try.

remember if you have an accident you are legally obliged to inform your insurance company, by filling in the form you have it on record you were in an accident.

you can use the DVLA licence check service to see if the car is registered and taxed, you can use the askmid database to see if it's on the insurance database.. this will at least let you know you have the right details, and that its not cloned/stolen/fake plates, if it's missing one of these or it doesnt add up I would sugest you contact the police and inform them you saw bits falling off a car, however the person has no decency so approaching them would be a waste of your time, and potentially cause you trouble.

[sorry I know this sounds like I'm sugesting you shouldnt try, but I've seen people who have had so much hassle because the system just doesnt work, just protect your back, because this guys already caused you enough hassle by driving an unroadworthy car.]

Oh right, it's 5yrs is it? Not had to fill out a claim form for a several yrs now so I'd forgotten. Fair do's.

The reason I say it makes no difference is that I have played about with online insurance quotations etc, getting a quote and then amending and adding things like non-fault accidents etc and lo and behold, as little as no difference. If indeed any, but there you go...

Good luck with the decency thing - most folks you come across these days are somewhat self obsessed masturbators who'll stop at nothing to avoid making a payout...

I'm a great believer in that if they ask you a question it's so they can judge upon it, I had an accident a long time ago when some old woman jumped a red light and wrote off my car, now I had to jump through some hoops to get the claim sorted but there was a witness and it was pretty open shut.. but even now years after I have to put it on my quote applications, I'm sure having 2 accidents on my record, one not at fault and one split liability is seen as worse than 1 with split..

could just be paranoia.. could be because of the people who manufacture accidents which they are not at fault so they can put in claims and not affect the rest of us.

Thats one of the reasons why I try to sort things like insurance out in person - you can get some bloody good deals by doing so, as they can see that you're not trying to screw them over or are hiding something.

Thats changed a bit since I moved to Adrian Flux since they are brokers, but I still pop in and sort stuff in person (they are only up the road) and I belive it makes a differance...

Better still, when he realises his is missing he might get on eBay himself... ...and end up buying his own one back!
