Hi all,

I have finally just fitted my customer rear taillights.

Heres a DIY of how to do them for yourself, although I would highly recommend you dont!

1. buy some rear clear lense covers (performance coupe sell them for £69 but they dont fit), dremel, black silicone sealant, stanley knife, a few rolls of electrical tape (low adhesive), can of primer, colour you want to use and clear laquer, sand paper, pliers, orange and red bulbs.

2. get your rear lights and smash the red lense off then use te pliers to nibble all the way to the edge. use a dremel to get rid of the red lip around the edge.

3. sand the chrome parts you want to spray a different colour then mask off the chrome parts you want to remain chrome.

4. spray with primer and leave to dry - 2-3 coats with 20 min drying time and leave overnight to dry. day after give them 2-3 coats of the colour you've chosen - again leave to dry. then about 5 coats of laquer to give a real nice shine to the paint.




Thats the easy part out of the way.

5. hold the lense up to the light unit and mark the excess that need to be cut away. Heat the stanley blade over the gas hob until it is glowing red then gradually trim the excess off. Make sure the windows are open as the fumes get strong. I would recommend using the hot blade as it shatters very very easily when trying to cut.



6.mask off and spray a 10mm border all the way around the inside of the lense as this will hide the silicone when pressed together.

7. silicone all the way around the edge of the light housing and whilst a mate presses the unit and lense together, you can tape all the way around the unit to hold it in place.



8. leave overnight then run a small bead of silicone around the whole unit to ensure it is water-tight then re-apply the original hyundai rubber seal.

9. re-fit the lights and change the brake/tail light for red and the indicator for orange or chrome covered amber bulb.

10. ensure all lights are working ok before re-fitting and tightening the nuts on the inside of the boot to hold the unit in place.

And there you have it. Amazing rear lights for about 8 days work, cuts to the hands, sealant all over the kitchen, loads of headaches and stress from ensuring everything fits ok.

Worth the not insubstantial effort though, those look fierce!

They do look great, but for the effort I think I'll stick to my lesss impressive lexus rears but I may tint them to give a nice smoked look.

you could always take them apart and spray them black albert. I reckon they will only be siliconed the same as the headlights.

Just use some heat to soften the glue.
I did mine afew weeks ago.What a bo##~x of a job though
