Hello,

I've got my new stereo, a Sony CDX GT300 from www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk for £107 inclusive (argos do it for £150!), and want some advice about fitting it.

I have a gen2 with the standard Sony stereo in it, I haven't taken it out yet but here are the cables I got for the new stereo. Will these fit, do I need a new any extra connectors?

Thanks.

Just changed my Gen 3 (think Gen 1/2/ 3 are all same ??) to an alpine unit - only problem I had was with the aerial, needed an ISO/JASO connector as the aerial "pin" from the cars wiring was to big to fit in the connector on the head-unit (cost £2 from Maplins if needed)

hello mate. you'll be fine if it's an RD Coupe. Good news is it will be more secure than most other cars as you don't need the cage.

1. Take off gear lever gaitor, and rest of centre console.
2. Put to one side. Old Sony should be secured by 4 screws facing you.
3. Unscrew these, pull out and unclip aerial and ISO connector.
4. Unscrew holding brackets from either side of old HU.
5. Screw brackets onto sides of new HU.
6. Place new HU in and plug ISO connector and Aerial.
7. Secure HU to car by screwing brackets into dash...
8. Carefully place trim back.
9. Happy listening.

PS. Make sure you swap yellow and red wires to keep memory in head unit.

Thanks to everyone for your replys.

Yes, I followed pretty much the same method as described above, and it worked a treat.

The only thing I would say is that mp3's/wma's aren't as bassy (infact I would say they are trebly) than normal CD's and even though I have been tweaking the settings its still not as bassy as I like. Still, its quite a novelty being able to switch albums without having to fish through the glove compartment whilst on the motorway. :b

Think a lot depends on the head-unit & what your used to

I've swapped the standard Clarion CD head unit for an Alpine MP3 & can honestly say that the Alpine unit sounds pretty awesome next to the Clarion one, even though I now listen to WMA instead of CD

Even that is a tad low. Of course it's a case of the law of diminishing returns however I'd be looking for at least 192kbps... (little reason not too given increasing connection speeds and storage).

read a bit about MP3 vs WMA when I bought my MP3 player (which supports both) - general information suggest that WMA is the same if not slightly better quality than MP3 with the added benefit of smaller file size - I now encode all my music in WMA (128k) format & it sounds good to me both in the car & on my MP3 player, don't really think the difference is noticeable between WMA & the original CD, not to a numpty like me anyway !!!
