The wife is having trouble with her gen 1 coupe and as I am in Italy I am trying to fix it remotely!!!!!
Several times over the last week she has got in the car turned the key and nothing has happened - no dashboard lights or anything. Turning the key on and off does nothing either but if she thumps the car eg gets out and closes the door or hits the dashboard lo and behold everything works again and she is off and running.
Unfortunately thats all the info I have so far as getting technical details out of her is as easy as me understanding her make up or the appeal of Celebrity Big Brother!! I'll be home next week and be expected to fix it so any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. One 'technical' bit of info is that when it starts the clock has reset to 0000 so its obviously a major power loss somewhere but where?

If the central locking is working OK then what you describe could be a loose connection on the ignition barrel. Certainly a loose connection somewhere, and they are a mare to find when you are near the car - nevermind being '000's of miles away...

One silly thing to check, the battery. If the clamps aren't on firmly then there will be trouble starting and/or no power until you thump it to get it to connect.

Yeah im putting my money on the battery terminal clamp if the clock is reseting to. I had exactly the same trouble. The battery terminals in my gen 1 are just mm too small so the clamp doesnt sit on tight enough (had to wedge a paper clip in) when you try to start it the clamp will jump off the terminal. Took me ages to work out what it was as it didnt do it everytime.
