Is this possible? I've had a search and it can be done on 2001 Elantra XD GLS (american one), does this have the same ECU as a coupe?

I think someone did this on a 1.6 Gen 3 (Paul896???) - Is it an easyish job (I know a custom wiring harness would need to be made)

Would've thought this will be a headache on a gen1, fella. The 1.6 '3 will most likely have the same loom as the 2.0 with the vacant plugs etc, though I doubt it.

IMO, the gauges are a waste of time anyways - you can tell what the torque is from the seat of your pants and a set of autogauges to cover voltage and oil pressure (or whatever it is) would be much easier to fit...

Just my 2cents, of course :thumbup

paul 896 tried and gave up mostly i think because of the wiring.you can get the wiring from diode dynamics if your willing to gamble your cash..................

entirely depends what you are wanting to monitor.

Ive got a boost gauge, oil temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and a air to fuel ratio gauge.

easy enough to wire in to be honest.

Oil pressure - get an oil pressure sensor installed and run the line straight from that to the gauge
oil temp sensor - replace the sump plug with a new adaptor and sensor (available on t-bay for afew quid)
voltage - too easy to even say
water temp - similar to oil temp just in a water line instead.
torque - not a clue on that one unless you can tap a pin from the ECU
a/f ratio - need a wideband lambda sensor and just run a wire from that

Gauges are available cheap enough indiviudally and you can get a pod holder yourself to install somewhere or you could try and retrofit a gen3 multigauge if you like, i went for the first option

Just looking at the standard Gen 3 one, volts, torque and mpg, the elantra ECU has outputs for torque and mpg and i didn't think the volts would be too hard - but don't know how similar the ecu's are

Didn't really want to go aftermarket - thought that the gen 3 one would sit under the radio and look like standard equipment

I've done a little bit of wiring in the coupe, but don't know if i could damage the ECU if i picked the wrong wire

"Ask Sharky" Springs to mind on this one. The gen 1 doesnt have a MPG read out display anywhere so not sure if the ECU is intelligent enough.

I remember seeing a guide for this yesterday, showing exactly where to attach each wire on the motor then on the unit. Ill dig it out of my browser history

EDIT: While we are on the subject can anyone mind what the lamp size is for these gauges? I rememeber a thread coming up about it but cannot find it now. I think they are 501 lamps
