Ive just had a set of G-max lowering springs put on my 1998 f2 and yeah it looks good, BUT- theres one hell of a noise coming from the front and rear. Why? I dont know alot but it sounds like the new springs are moving freely up and down as if the car doesn't know there are new springs on and the gap is causing the new springs to bounce when i go over every bump. It sounds like something is going to drop off!! Has anyone else had this problem or knows how to sought it out because its doing my head in, or does this problem always happen and the shocks need to get used to the new height- so it will lower gradually- meaning the noise will wear off. Please someone help- thanks Damien. :aargh

Yeah you could be right, its going back to the garage on Wednesday. The guy who fitted them said they weren't sitting right- so when he dropped the Jack they could of moved meaning the car is not sitting on them properly like it should. Its a banging noise and loud- doesnt sound healthy at all and im scared to drive over 50mph because of it. Strange how there not sitting right front and rear though!! Thanks for your input guys.

Whenever I had lowering springs in my golf I found that upon building the struts back together with the springs in, the top bolt on the damper which retains the whole assembly together would come lose. It only ever happened when I was putting the front struts back in and was tightening the top nut which held the top of the strut at the chassis. This was because when you buzz the top nut on, the damper would actually spin and the assembly nut would therefore loosen and hense the spring would be fit to wander when strut is fully depressed as the whole assembly was not fully held together.
A good tester for this was simply pop the bonnet, lean on a wing and apply your weight up and down on the front end, whilst doing this look at the top of the struts in the engine bay, and if you see large movement up and down, thats exactly what it is.

Now to combat the problem, all dampers usually have an allen key slot at the top end of the damper piston. This is there specifically for the purpose of holding the damper piston from spinning with an allen key whilst tightening the top nut with a spanner or socket. If the nut is recessed into a shoulder'd flange, then a socket is required with a pair of vice grips as you will have to put the allen key down through the centre of the socket to hold the damper piston.

Even if this is not the case, its a commonality in some cars that I have seen and possibly a bit of useful info for future reference.

Thankyou 'boyo', the symtoms my car has and the problem you have described sounds like an instant match. Im gonna try to explain what you have just said to the mechanic when i see him in the morning. It does sound like the whole unit is not tightened as you said and obviously making a loud banging noise as i drive over every bump in the road. Mate- thanks agai for your feedback.............Damien ;)
