Brake pipes
hello i'm a newbie joined today chuffed having discovered the site during a search for brake pipe change cost.

Been quotes £120 to supply (make) and fit rear brake pipe by MOT/garage who says its the "one that goes over the fuel tank"

am I being ripped off? or is it a case of anything under £150 spent to get through MOT is lucky?

many thanks
ShibbyDibby

total rip off mate, 25FT of cupri-nicol comonly know as cunifer 3/16 brake pipe(the stuff that does not corrode or furr like copper) £12. tool less than £20 for one that will do the job.
hour or so to fit + bleed .

i dont use garages as i am a mechanic in a bus garage and we have our own fleet so i've no idea what people are charged.

but i think its a rip off

dupe i think he means the rigid pipes not the flexi.

For one pipe can be debatable, i guess it depends how far up the car it has to go aswell.

does sound asthough it could be a bit steep, go round get a couple of quotes and see wha they say.

Depending on where you are in the country I'd say £120 could well be quite the norm. It's not the parts that cost - copper tubing and replacement fluid is probably only around £25/£30 - but there's a not-insignificant amount of labour to route the pipework front to rear, fill and bleed and I can see that taking more than an hour.

For peace of mind you could ask for some estimates from another garage or two - they should be able to at least verbally quote ballpark figures over the phone.

:yeahthat

Price seems reasonable enough to me - I the rear ones done on my first car (mkII Fiesta) in 1997 and that was £70 back then...

Definately ring round a few garages, I remember paying around £60 for the two rear break pipes to be replaced on my Gen 1 1-2 years ago

Brake pipes (Rear Left and Rear Right) £19.07 each from Halfauds.

+ Cost of Brake Spanner (£3.99), 4 DOT Fluid (£10.99), Hose Clamp (£4.99) and autobleed (£6.99).

The part that causes the MOT failure is quite short.

All that's needed then is your time.

Given the fuel tank mention it's the brake lines, not hoses, that needed replacing hence the front-to-rear routing that's required.

Just discovered, my MOT failure was for same problem.

£210.00 at dealer including flexi-pipes and labour.
