Garage have said just do it up tight (no particular torque) and if i'm not sure pop in for 5 minutes.

what componant is it that actually causes this knocking noise?

Could you please post a picture showing where and what was wrong as mine occasionally "knocks" very slightly.

Its just one or more of the 3 nuts at the top of the strut on the inside of the car coming loose, even if the nuts come completely off (unlikely) the length of the bolts are good enough so the strut doesn't just fall out. Its still attached at the bottom and has the weight on it.

For a gen3 you get to the top from within the boot, you have to take the covers off, theres a few screws and its the same thing you do when fitting a rear strut bar, you have to undo and take off the nuts to put the bar on.
